The Six Pieces of the Armor of God
Here are the six pieces from Ephesians 6:14-17 (King James Version) and what each one means.
Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14)
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth”
The belt holds the rest of a soldier's gear together. Truth keeps our words and choices steady, because it starts with what God says is true.
Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14)
“and having on the breastplate of righteousness”
The breastplate covers the chest and heart. Living rightly with God guards our hearts from guilt and from bad choices.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (Ephesians 6:15)
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace”
Shoes let a soldier stand firm and move quickly. The good news of peace with God gives us steady footing and sends us to share it.
Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16)
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked”
A shield blocks arrows. Trusting God puts something strong between us and doubts, fears and temptations.
Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17)
“And take the helmet of salvation”
The helmet guards the head. Knowing we are saved protects our thinking and gives hope when we are afraid.
Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)
“and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”
The sword is the only weapon in the list. God's Word is how we answer lies, as Jesus did when He was tempted.
Why Learn About the Armor of God?
Paul wrote Ephesians from prison, and he likely looked at the Roman soldiers who guarded him when he described the armor. Each piece he lists stands for something God gives His people: truth, a right standing with God, peace, faith, salvation and His Word. Playing a game helps children and adults remember the six pieces and the verses they come from, so the passage is easier to recall when it is needed.
After the game, try reading Ephesians 6:10-18 together and ask which piece each person finds hardest to use. For more verse practice, play the Bible memory verse game take the longer Armor of God quiz with an explanation for every answer, or test yourself with the Bible quiz.
Armor of God for Sunday School and Families
Teachers can put the soldier on a screen and ask the class to call out the answer before each tap. Families can take turns, one person reading the question and another choosing the answer. A simple way to use it in a lesson is to play Quiz mode first, then read the verses in the list above and let children draw their own soldier with the six pieces.
