6 to 30, in teams of 5 or 610 minutesChairs or floor in lines

The Bible Story

Long ago, people learned the Scriptures by hearing and repeating them. Memorising a verse is like putting a treasure in your heart.

The whisper chain is a funny and gentle way to practise a verse. It also shows how easy it is to change a message when it is passed on.

Verse to remember (Psalm 119:11): The writer kept God's word in his heart so that he would not go the wrong way.

How to Play

  1. Choose a short verse, such as John 3:16, Psalm 23:1 or Philippians 4:13. Write it on a card for the leader.
  2. Form teams in lines. The first player in each line hears the verse from the leader.
  3. Each player whispers it to the next. No repeating, no asking again.
  4. The last player stands and says the verse aloud.
  5. The leader reads the real verse. The team scores 1 point for each correct word and a bonus for a perfect verse.
  6. Move the first player to the back and play with a new verse.

How it ends: Finish by saying the verse together, three times, from the heart.

Leader can say: “It is easy to mix up words, so let's keep God's word safe by learning it well.”

For Every Age

For little ones: Use a short verse with a few words, such as "Jesus wept" (John 11:35) or "God is love" (1 John 4:8).

For teens and adults: Older players can try a longer verse or two verses, and then talk about what the verse means.

Safety: Whisper softly and do not shout. Let anyone who prefers to skip whispering give the leader a high five instead.

Talk About It

After the game, sit together and ask:

  • Which word was easiest to change by mistake?
  • Why is it good to learn verses by heart?
  • How can we remember this verse during the week?
