Pentecost Wind and Fire Game
Make the sound of the wind, wave flame hands and share the good news together. No supplies needed.
The Bible Story
After Jesus went back to heaven, his followers waited together in Jerusalem. On the day of Pentecost, a sound like a rushing wind filled the house, and what looked like small flames rested on each person. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to tell the good news so that people from many places understood.
The church began on that day. This game helps everyone picture the wind, the fire and the joy.
Verse to remember (Acts 2:2-4): A sound like a strong wind filled the house, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.
How to Play
- Sit together. The leader tells the Pentecost story in a few short sentences.
- Make the wind: everyone rubs hands together, then pats knees, then stamps feet softly, getting louder and then quiet again.
- Make the fire: everyone wiggles their fingers above their head like small flames.
- Play the "wind and fire" game: when the leader says "wind", everyone makes the wind sound. When the leader says "fire", everyone wiggles flame fingers.
- Add a third word, "tell". When the leader says "tell", each player turns to a neighbour and says "Jesus loves you".
- Mix the words faster and faster, and finish with a quiet "tell".
How it ends: Ask what the first followers did after Pentecost. Remind everyone that God's Spirit helps us share good news.
Leader can say: “God's Spirit gave the first followers courage. God's Spirit helps us too.”
For Every Age
For little ones: Use only wind and fire. Let little ones copy the leader and enjoy the sounds.
For teens and adults: Older players can read Acts 2:1-13 aloud and talk about how the Spirit helped people understand each other.
Safety: Keep the wind sound at a friendly volume. If someone dislikes loud noise, let them wiggle fingers only.
Talk About It
After the game, sit together and ask:
- What do you think the wind sounded like?
- Why was the good news told in many languages?
- Who can you tell about Jesus this week?
